ASSISTING THE HOMELESS DURING WINTER

WAYS TO HELP NEIGHBORS WHO ARE HOMELESS THIS WINTER
HELP IS HERE

WHAT NOT TO DO
1. DON’T HAND OUT MONEY
You want to help because your heart aches to see someone
in need. But the gift from your heart may not address
someone's real needs! Pointing our hurting neighbors to
resources in the community may be more helpful in the
long run.
2. DON’T GO SOMEWHERE PRIVATE
Stay in public areas, in daylight when possible, and make
sure other people can see you. Maintain a safe distance and
respect their personal space. Don’t give anyone a ride – it
is better to provide a bus pass and directions to Knox Area
Rescue Ministries.
3. DON’T GIVE UP HOPE
Everybody deserves a second chance! Your care and
compassion could encourage someone to change their life.
You can make a huge impact when you reach out in a spirit
of kindness as the Lord’s hands and feet.

WHAT TO DO
1. ACKNOWLEDGE THEM/TREAT THEM WITH DIGNITY
Say hello. Make eye contact. Smile. A brief, friendly
conversation can restore their dignity and lift their spirits,
as many of our homeless neighbors battle depression,
loneliness and other struggles. For everyone's health and
safety, maintain a respectful distance.
2. BE PREPARED TO GIVE A “BLESSING BAG”
Offer an alternative to giving money by keeping “blessing
bags” in your car. When you meet someone who needs help,
you will be ready with real, tangible assistance!
